What is the true purpose of movies? Is it to enrich society with important life experiences? Of course ... NOT! The real reason we have movies today is so that other people can make fun of them. "Scary Movie 3" does an excellent job of fulfilling this purpose.
"Scary Movie 3" is definitely one of the funniest movies of the year. Nowhere else will you see the plotlines of so many movies intertwined. The movies parodied are as diverse as "The Ring," "Signs," "The Others," "8 Mile," "The Matrix," "The Matrix Reloaded" and "Bruce Almighty."
"Scary Movie 3" copies the formula of "Scary Movie" and "Scary Movie 2" in that the movie not only has a diverse range of films it takes cracks at, but also has a diverse cast. This particular movie stars Anna Faris, Charlie Sheen and Simon Rex. Other appearances include Queen Latifah, Eddie Griffin, Leslie Neilson, Pamela Anderson, Jenny McCarthy, Fat Joe, Ja Rule and Denise Richards. With this many incredible people in the film, it is bound to be great.
The movie primarily follows the plotlines of "The Ring" and "Signs." It follows the lives of Cindy Crawford (Faris) and ex-priest Tom (Sheen). Cindy Crawford is a reporter for a TV station and the guardian of her orphaned nephew. She watches a movie that depicts a girl and a well. After finishing the film, she gets a phone call saying that in seven days she's going to die.
Elsewhere in a small town outside of Washington, D.C., Tom, an ex-priest whose wife (Richards) died in a car accident, discovers crop circles in his cornfield. Throughout the movie, single parent Tom struggles with the death of his wife, but not in the way you'd expect.
Tom's accident-prone brother George (Rex), who also lives on the farm, has dreams of becoming a rap artist. He goes into the city for a rap battle and meets Cindy. Later Cindy is contacted by Orpheus, who takes her to see the oracle (Latifah). She learns that the crop circles and the film are linked and that she is "the one" that must help the president (Nielson) fight off the alien invasion. She is sent to the architect, who reveals to her the truth about the tape. From there she goes to Tom's farm, which escalates into a hilarious ending.
Of the Scary Movie trilogy, "Scary Movie 3" is by far the best. This can be attributed to the fact that it's not one hundred percent sexual humor as was the first and unlike "Scary Movie 2," "Scary Movie 3" is actually funny. A star studded cast also helps this movie shine above the others. In the other two films, the biggest name actors were the Wayans brothers.
The other great thing about "Scary Movie 3" is that it's one of those movies created purely for the entertainment of audiences everywhere. There is no deep meaning you are supposed to get out of it, because this movie has no substance whatsoever. Instead of sitting in a theater trying to analyze the film and take away an important moral message, "Scary Movie 3" allows you to go in, sit down and have fun. Honestly, what kind of life lesson can you get out of Pamela Anderson and Jenny McCarthy as Catholic school girls having a sleepover?
If there is any meaning that can be attained from this "so-stupid-it's-funny" movie, it would have to be that when it comes down to it, movies should be made to entertain. "Scary Movie 3" is full of dialogue in which the characters are being very emotional and serious when they are talking about hilarious subject matter; this all going on while dramatic music is playing in the background. It says that movies in general are sometimes too deep and melodramatic, and that some filmmakers are so focused on winning an Oscar that they lose sight of the fact that the movie is all about the audience. Besides, when you have so many dramatic movies released that are "Oscar worthy," you need movies like "Scary Movie 3" to lighten the mood.
People should only go see this movie under two conditions. If you are a fan of movies such as Austin Powers, Monty Python and other movies that do nothing but make you laugh, or if you just need to see something funny, then it is necessary to see "Scary Movie 3."
Remember, the purpose of movies should always be to entertain society, to help us escape from the harsh reality that is life. When the audience leaves the theater happy and feeling better, is when the movie has truly achieved its purpose.
