Heisman Trophy runner-up Larry Fitzgerald will not return to Pittsburgh for his junior year opting instead to enter the NFL draft. The NFL ruled that Fitzgerald can enter the April draft because he is three years past his senior year of high school.
The same day, a federal judge overturned the NFL's policy preventing athletes from entering the draft prior to completing three years of college.
Fitzgerald is the top-ranked prospect in the nation at the wide receiver position according to ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. He was the dominant receiver for the Panthers last season, and was the most proficient receiver in Pittsburgh history with a NCAA-record of 34 catches in his freshman and sophomore years. Last year, Fitzgerald caught 87 passes and led all NCAA receivers with 1,595 yards. He had 22 touchdown catches, and he holds the NCAA record for touchdown receptions consecutive games with 18.
Despite losing the race for the Heisman to Oklahoma's quarterback Jason White, Fitzgerald won the Biletnikoff Trophy, awarded to college football's top receiver, and the Walter Camp Award as the nation's best player.
