Women's soccer brings in strong recruiting class

Virginia women's soccer coach Steve Swanson addressed needs across the field with his newest recruiting class, signing two defenders in Brett Burns and Nikki Giunta, midfielder Jen Redmond, forward Sarah Curtis and goalkeeper Laura Comeau.

The five newcomers join 17 returners from a Virginia team that went 12-5-4 and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2003.

Two of the players -- midfielder Redmond (Morristown, NJ) and goalkeeper Comeau (Lee, NH) -- have been teammates prior to their commitment to Virginia, logging time together on the U-19 National Team.

Redmond, the 2003 New Jersey Player of the Year and NSCAA All-American, has promise to be the gem of the class. She scored 26 goals with 27 assists in only 20 games her senior year, leading Oak Knoll to a 16-3-1 record.

Four of the five recruits led their high school teams to a state title game at least once in their careers, with three coming out victorious.
