Littlepage discusses future with Gillen

Virginia head basketball coach Pete Gillen was scheduled to meet with Athletic Director Craig Littlepage yesterday morning to review the state of the men's basketball program, the Charlottesville Daily Progress reported.

Top Virginia officials have aroused recent suspicion surrounding Gillen's coaching status by not commenting on whether or not the coach will be retained for the remainder of his contract. Gillen has seven years remaining on his contract that pays him approximately $900,000 per season, with the majority of it assumed to be guaranteed with no certain buyout clause.

Since joining the Cavaliers six seasons ago, Gillen has compiled a 104-78 record with five consecutive postseason appearances. But recent struggles, including three straight sub-.500 ACC finishes, have apparently merited discussions between Gillen and his superiors.

Littlepage, a member of the Division I men's basketball committee, will be unable to meet again this week as he left yesterday after the scheduled meeting for this weekend's Final Four in San Antonio. Gillen and his assistants also will fly to San Antonio later in the week.
