After tying a school record with nine wins to open the season, No. 27 Virginia had its streak snapped Friday afternoon at Illinois, falling to the defending champion Fighting Illini, 6-1, Friday afternoon.
Illinois (12-0) swept the doubles matches and won the top five singles matches. No. 6 Darrin Cohen registered the only win for Virginia, coming back from a set down to defeat G.D. Jones 4-6, 6-4, 10-8.
In the only other match to go to three sets, Virginia's Rylan Rizza took the first, 6-2. He won only three games in the final two sets, however, allowing Illinois' No. 54 ranked Michael Calkins to earn a 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory at the No. 3 spot.
The Cavaliers bounced back to beat No. 64 Indiana yesterday, squeaking by 4-3 in a tightly contested match. Virginia won at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to earn the opening point and got wins from No. 3 Rylan Rizza, No. 4 Marko Milko and No. 5 Nick Meythaler to clinch the victory. 98th-ranked Stephen Rozek continued his struggles, losing at the No. 2 spot for the third straight match.
