Women's golf takes sixth place in Calif. tourney

The Virginia women's golf team took sixth place in the UC-Irvine Anteater Invitational Tournament on Tuesday. The sixth-place team finish was the highest this season for the first-year women's golf program.

San Francisco ran away with the tournament title, finishing at a 19-over par 883, 29 strokes ahead of the second-place finisher, Brigham Young University. Virginia shot a 66-over 930 to tie with San Jose State for sixth place in a field of 13 teams.

Freshman Sally Shonk led the Cavaliers with an 11-over 227, a score good enough for an individual finish of 11th. Shonk's two-over 74 in the final round was the lowest round for any Virginia golfer.

The Cavaliers will play in the Bryan Park Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C. April 2-4.
