George Welsh selected to College Football Hall of Fame

Former Virginia head football coach George Welsh became a member of the 2004 College Football Hall of Fame class yesterday with one other former coach and 12 Division I-A players. Welsh, who led the Cavaliers to a 134-86-3 (.608) record in his 19 seasons at Virginia, becomes the school's third head coach inducted into the Hall of Fame.

After beginning his career at his alma mater, Navy, Welsh was hired by then-Virginia Athletic Director Dick Schultz in 1982 to turn around a floundering program. After an initial 2-9 season, Welsh's 1983 team finished above .500 at 6-5. The following season, Welsh gained national attention by guiding the Cavaliers to the school's first ever bowl game -- a 27-24 win over Purdue in the 1984 Peach Bowl.

From 1987 to 1999, Welsh's Cavaliers were one of only four teams to win at least seven games each season. Welsh also earned National Coach of the Year honors in 1989, 1991 and 1998 as well as ACC Coach of the Year a record five times.
