The Hokies scored four of the game's first five goals to gain an early lead over the favored Cavaliers, but Virginia pulled away in the second half to win a 20-13 shootout in Blacksburg.
Attacker Amy Appelt scored a game-high six goals for No. 7 Virginia, and attacker Tyler Leachman added five of her own as the Cavaliers (13-3, 2-1 ACC) had their highest scoring total to date this season. The loss drops the No. 20 Hokies to 7-7 on the year.
After falling behind early, the Cavaliers went on an 11-2 scoring run to pull ahead 12-6. The Hokies kept the score close throughout most of the second half, and a Stephanie Jones goal with just over seven minutes left narrowed the Virginia advantage to three, 16-13.
The Cavaliers crushed any hope Virginia Tech had of completing their comeback, as a pair of Appelt goals along with scores by Jess Wisnewski and Kim Connors sealed the victory for Virginia.
