Michael Raab, Luke Wagner, Fran Crippen and Brielle White all came close to making the trip to Athens this summer to represent the United States in the Olympics, but not close enough.
Raab finished third in the finals of the 200-meter butterfly Saturday with a time of 1:57.71. Phenom Michael Phelps won the event, swimming the distance in 1:54.31. Raab was only 34 hundredths of a second behind the second-place finisher, Tom Malchow.
White took fourth in the 100-meter backstroke Friday, finishing with a time of 1:02.23. She was only one second slower than what turned out to be the qualifying time, Haley Cope's 1:01.24.
Wagner also qualified for the finals in his event, the 200-meter backstroke, but finished in eighth with a time of 2:01.36. He was six and a half seconds behind first-place finisher Aaron Peirsol.
Crippen finished seventh in the 1500-meter freestyle semifinals to qualify for last night's finals, where he took sixth place with a time of 15:34.88.
