Weeks after officially anointing junior Marques Hagans starting quarterback, Virginia head coach Al Groh has named redshirt freshman Kevin McCabe backup for Saturday's matchup at Temple.
McCabe, a 6-foot-2-inch 203-pound pocket passer from Wexford, Pa., threw for over 2,000 yards and 30 touchdowns his senior year of high school. He was named a SuperPrep All-American and consensus top 20 recruit in 2003 and is currently ahead of sophomores Christian Olsen and Anthony Martinez on the depth chart. However, Groh said no one currently has a permanent place behind Hagans.
In the Cavaliers spring game, McCabe completed four of nine passes for 41 yards. Olsen, a transfer from Notre Dame, has never taken a college snap, and Martinez threw for 136 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions while completing less than 50 percent of his passes last season.
