Lundy up for top running back award

Virginia junior tailback Wali Lundy yesterday was named to the watch list for the Doak Walker Award, given to the nation's top running back.

Lundy led the Cavaliers' running game last season, rushing for a career-high 929 yards. His performance was good enough for fourth in the conference at 77.4 yards-per-game.

Seven other ACC players join Lundy on the list, including Josh Allen and Sammy Maldonado of Maryland, North Carolina State's T.A. McLendon, Miami's Franklin Gore, Georgia Tech's P.J. Daniels, Wake Forest's Chris Barclay and Ronnie McGill of North Carolina.

The award is named for former three-time All-American running back Doak Walker of Southern Methodist University. In addition to being an exceptional athlete, candidates for the accolade must also be in good academic standing.

The award winner will be announced live on ESPN Dec. 9.
