Three new doctors from the University Medical Center were included in the recently published 2004 America's Top Doctors guide to specialists.
Compiled and published by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., the book also includes 45 other previously listed University specialists. It is published both to recognize exemplary doctors and to serve as a guide for patients trying to find specialists. This year, doctors who were included were nominated by a survey pool of almost 250,000 other physicians.
"We basically want to know doctors that they consider to be excellent and also caring," said Jean Morgan, M.D., vice president and director of research at Castle Connolly Medical, Ltd. "We want to know about doctors that they or a member of their family would go to."
The new doctors added to the guide this year were Dr. Paul Diamond, specializing in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Dr. Suzanne Holroyd, specializing in Geriatric Psychiatry, and Dr. Cato Laurencin, specializing in Orthopaedic Surgery.
According to Jan Morrison, public relations specialist for the University Medical Center, the University typically has 45 doctors every year in the book. The book is updated annually and thus the same doctors are not always included.
Morrison said for many doctors being named in the book is a high honor.
"A lot of doctors take it very seriously, they want to call us and make sure that everything is correct because they regard it as a very high honor," Morrison said. "The ones that we've heard from are very excited about it."
Morrison likened the book to a "Who's Who" guide of college campuses. The America's Top Doctors book includes basic details about a physician, such as area of specialty, region and medical school.
Morgan said the book aims to include about 1 percent of the nation's practicing physicians, though currently they are shy of that goal.
