Honor, UJC members debate case jurisdiction

According to its constitution, the Honor Committee can hear cases of lying, cheating and stealing at the University. According to its Standards of Conduct, so can the University Judiciary Committee.

Without a decisive way of adjudicating cases that could fall under both committees, Honor and UJC members currently are investigating ways to remedy jurisdictional overlap.

While members of the UJC issues subcommittee could not talk specifically about how many cases of questionable jurisdiction have arisen, they said the issue is a pressing one because some University deans may be using UJC as a way of seeking out guilty verdicts in cases that would not be deemed serious enough to be prosecuted by the Honor Committee.

"The most obvious thing is that the complainant would have an aversion to the single sanction," UJC Counselor Scott Jones said. "Either they can't get the honor offense because of the seriousness clause
