The No. 9 Virginia men's tennis team defeated three top ten squads this weekend before falling by the score of 4-1 to No. 1 Baylor at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Chicago. When the new rankings come out today, the Cavaliers will likely receive their highest ranking in the history of the program. Virginia topped No. 7 Stanford Thursday, No. 2 UCLA Friday and No. 6 Mississippi Saturday in its run to the Championship game against the top-ranked Bears, who now own a winning streak of 32 straight matches dating back to last season. Sunday's loss was a first for the Cavaliers this season, with their record now standing at 8-1.
In the opening round of their first appearance in the National Team Indoors, the Cavaliers handed the Cardinals their first loss of the season, 4-1. Virginia followed up this performance Friday by knocking off UCLA, 4-2, in the quarterfinals of the tournament. The Bruins were the highest ranked opponent that the Cavaliers ever have defeated. Saturday Virginia became only the second ACC team ever to reach the finals of the tournament by pounding the Rebels of Ole Miss into submission with a 4-1 victory. The Cavs were led by junior Doug Stewart, whose current individual ranking is No. 19. Also posting individual points for Virginia over Ole Miss were No. 22 Somdev Devvarman and No. 104 Treat Huey.
