Tired of that old sweatshirt? Beginning to realize that your closet is packed, leaving no room to update your wardrobe with spring's hottest new styles? Last week, and continuing into this week, Phi Eta Sigma, a national honor society, is urging students to think twice about discarding their old clothing during the familiar ritual of spring cleaning. By setting up a University-wide clothing drive, the Society is encouraging students to donate their unwanted clothing articles to benefit local charities instead of throwing the items out as "last season" styles.
Phi Eta Sigma's service director, second-year College student Jen Lilley, came up with the idea for the project after realizing that University students are a clothes-conscious community. Because most organizations target the Christmas season for their community service projects, she said she thought a spring clothing drive would encourage good will during this time period.
"I decided that a spring clothing drive would be an excellent way to help out because no one thinks to donate clothes in the spring," Lilley said. "Think about it -- everyone's in the giving spirit around the Christmas holiday season, and spring gets the shaft. Plus, what better time to clear out your closets than the spring when all the new fads are coming out?"
Drop boxes, conveniently located in the dining halls, mail rooms and first-year dormitories, provide a venue for students to leave old clothing. However, the boxes are not the only means by which students can participate in the service project.
