The University Judiciary Committee prepared for an ambitious academic year with the appointment of three new support officers last night.
UJC Chair-elect Tim Ormsby described last night's proceedings as "the most competitive selection that I can remember in the last several years."
UJC appointed Sarah Abreu, Scott Jones and Ramsey Daher to the positions of senior educator, senior counselor, and senior investigator, respectively. Ormsby and the three executive vice-chairs interviewed the candidates and deliberated on their qualifications. Ormsby said the officers were chosen from "a much more experienced pool of people" than in previous years. The new officers join Ormsby, the vice-chairs and six other members to form the UJC Executive Committee.
Ormsby said he is optimistic about the Committee's vision for the coming year.
"Our main goal is to increase education within the community," he said.
This plan includes the formation of a dorm liaison program that, along with the Honor Committee, will attempt to familiarize first-year students with the honor system and judiciary proceedings.
"Essentially, it's a mentoring process ... that will provide a personal contact and a liason to the committees," Ormsby said.
Abreu, Jones and Daher said they are excited about the prospect of the new program as both an educational and recruiting tool.
"The better understanding that students have [of UJC], the more they'll want to be involved," Daher said.
Abreu said she expects to use her position as senior educator to "promote general awareness about UJC and make it more visible."
Jones said he also anticipates opportunities for UJC to increase student involvement for the 2005-2006 year.
"We're always the red-headed stepchild of Honor," he said. "But on a one-to-one level, we affect more students [than Honor does]."
Jones explained that many students are unaware of UJC procedures. He predicted that the Committee and the dorm liaison in particular will help to remedy this situation.
"I hope that, five years from now, first years will know what UJC is," Jones said. "They don't have to be involved, but at least they will know who we are."
The new officers assume their positions April 1 and await a formal confirmation by the entire UJC body this Sunday. Jones said he is confident in the leadership of the newly-formed Executive Committee.
"It's like trying to improve on perfection," he said.
