The Cavalier Daily
Serving the University Community Since 1890

From the Editor

Along with popped collars and Mr. Jefferson, this University is known for at least one other trait: competition.

Admissions are highly competitive, as many high school seniors can appreciate this time of year, and our sports teams and academic departments regularly compete for national rankings.

With all the competition around Grounds, this week's tableau gets in on the action.

As early as January, tableau staffers were clamoring to review Frank Miller's Sin City, last weekend's top-grossing movie -- its stylized visuals, all-star cast and gritty storyline caught the eye of some of our best movie critics.

With all the staffers begging to review the movie, we couldn't help but hold a little competition. In the end, four staffers took a shot at Sin City and wrote a review.

Read the winning review on page ten and, while you're at it, take a look at excerpts from the other three reviews. Then, head to cavalierdaily.com and read all four full-length Sin City pieces in our Online Exclusives section -- it's a great way to compare and contrast different writing styles.

But Sin City wasn't enough.

After the dust settled, the staff decided to bond over ice cream. But this was no ordinary ice cream: tableau took on the Vermonster for this week's cover shoot.

After a brief road trip from Newcomb Basement to the Barracks Road Ben & Jerry's, we plopped down our $35 for a few rounds with the 20-scoop heavyweight. Two rounds of concerted gorging and 17 minutes later, the fight was over.

Final score: Vermonster, 1; tableau, 0.
