Judiciary Committee selects first-year judges

Seventeen students were chosen last week to serve as first-year judges, according to Connor Sullivan, University Judiciary Committee vice chair for first years.

The newly selected panel then elected Payvand Ahdout to serve as chair of the First Year Judiciary Committee. Greg Corkan was elected vice chair.

According to Ahdout, four people ran for the chair position. Each candidate gave a speech and was then dismissed from the room while the remaining judges deliberated for about an hour, Ahdout said. Three judges then ran for the vice chair position.

Ahdout added she wants "to make it an enjoyable year for all of first-year judges and a painless process for everyone who enters the room not knowing what to expect."

Corkan said as a member of his high school's honor council he was looking for a way to continue being involved in a school judiciary process.

"I want to help maintain a community of respect in the first-year class," Corkan added.

According to Sullivan, the FYJC operates under the same procedure as the regular UJC but its jurisdiction is limited to first years in first-year living areas.

While the UJC and FYJC processes are separate, the UJC hears appeals from the FYJC.

Sullivan added that 186 first years sat for a test composed of multiple-choice and short-answer questions last week.

Ninety candidates were chosen from that pool to sit on a mock sanctioning panel. The final round of individual interviews took about 45 applicants, Sullivan said.

Ahdout and Corkhan "are both very, very able and intelligent and passionate young folks," Sullivan said. "I'm really excited to see two people who share my idea that UJC can do something to make U.Va. a better, safer, fairer place."
