Virginia runs strong at Pre-Nationals

The men's and women's cross country teams traveled to Indiana State University this weekend to compete in the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet. Both teams were coming off impressive showings two weeks ago in the Roy Girak Invitational and the men's team ascended to its highest ranking in program history, No. 14.

The men's team placed 12th out of 35 teams competing in the meet. Virginia was led by senior Jan Forester, who turned in a stellar performance and finished 10th overall. The Cavaliers notched important victories over No. 19 William and Mary, No. 20 Arizona State and No. 28 Eastern Michigan.

The women's team finished 11th out of 35 teams and was led by junior Emily Harrison and senior Kara Scanlin. The two leaders finished seven seconds apart and both finished within the top 25. Overall Virginia placed four runners in the top 100. Virginia is ranked No. 26 and finished just behind No. 7 Princeton and No. 11 Iowa.

The strong display turned in by both teams at the Pre-Nationals meet is especially important because the NCAA cross country championships will be held at the same venue in Terre Haute, Ind.

Next weekend, Virginia will host the 2006 ACC championships Saturday, Oct. 28 at Panorama Farms. The Virginia men come into the ACC championship meet as the defending conference champions and will likely be the team to beat.
