Today the Office of African-American Affairs launched a peer counseling program for African-American students, Project R.I.S.E. (Resolving Issues through Support and Education).

The program attempts to create a comfortable environment in which black students can seek peer counseling, Project R.I.S.E. peer educator Krystal Commons said.

The idea behind Project R.I.S.E originated with Commons and fellow student Reggie White, another R.I.S.E. peer educator.

"Sometimes as a community we forget that we [in the University community] are one," Commons said. "This program allows us to talk together as a community and as peers."

The leaders of the program say they hope to collaborate with other groups to help fight depression at the University, according to Dean of Students Penny Rue, so students can better "cope with the anxieties and stress of college life."
