Successful silencing

I was interested to read Josh Levy's opinion column "How best to silence homophobes" (Nov 12). During my time at the University, the chant was quite pervasive and was sometimes clearly audible even on televised broadcasts of games.

Fortunately, the negative publicity over the past few years targeting the "not gay" chant as well as educational efforts by the University community seem to have reduced the chant to a fraction of its previous volume. In the football games I have attended over the past few seasons (sometimes sitting in the student section), the "not gay" chant has been either inaudible or barely noticeable.

Although there may always be a few homophobes who continue this dubious tradition, I feel confident that continued efforts by the University community will ensure their irrelevance.
