ISC elects new '08-'09 executive board

The Inter-Sorority Council held its annual elections last night, voting into office an executive board whose members say increasing sorority involvement in philanthropy events will be one of several goals for their 2008-09 term.

Third-year College student Stuart Berkeley was elected to serve as president of the ISC. She will be joined on the executive board by third-year College student Ashleigh Carson as vice president of recruitment, third-year College student Dana Ganpath as vice president of judiciary, second-year College student Kelly McLaughlin as vice president of administration and third-year Engineering student Jenn Betzwieser as vice president of finance.

The remaining ISC officers will be elected in January, according to current ISC president Laura Anne Kuykendall.

"I'm excited for the new board," Kuykendall said. "I think they are going to have a lot of great ideas and they'll do a lot of great things in the future with the ISC."

Berkeley said she would not only like to increase involvement in philanthropy events but also continue working with the other Greek councils on events such as the Mid-Autumns Carnival and Greek Weekend.

"It was a wonderful idea to bring all the Greek councils together and we would like to work out the kinks that we realized in this first year to make it a more successful project in the future," Berkeley said of Greek Weekend.

Carson said while the current executive board will preside over 2008 recruitment, she hopes to continue expanding the ISC's numbers in 2009.

"I think it's important for us to take advantage of our position to educate prospective sorority members about what sorority life is actually like and how it can enhance one's college experience," Carson said. "I want to make that information about recruitment very accessible to prospective members and encourage as many girls to rush as possible."

Current ISC Public Relations Chair Marci Stewart said the new officers' extensive experience with the ISC will be an asset to the organization and will ensure a smooth transition.

"There's a lot of experience those girls bring to the table," Stewart said. "Sometimes in the past we've had people come in that are new to the ISC. This way there won't be any starting over. We'll be able to hit the ground running with all the experience they have."

Berkeley said she looks forward to working with the new officers in the spring.

"I'm definitely excited," Berkeley said. "I think it's a wonderful group of women and I think we're going to do a great job."

The new ISC executive board will transition in February, following the end of spring recruitment.
