Virginia finds success in N.C.

The Virginia swim and dive teams routed Duke and Gardner Webb Saturday in Durham, N.C. Sunday, freshman Liz Shaw broke an ACC record in the 200 butterfly, finishing at 1:57.04. Virginia also split its meet with North Carolina. The women claimed a 191-109 victory over UNC, but the men slightly faltered, falling 151-149.

Coming off a month and a half break from competition, both the men and women reaped the benefits of their intense winter break training program.

The Cavaliers returned from a week long training trip in Costa Rica just two days before squaring off against the Blue Devils and the Bull Dogs. Both the men and women won eight events apiece and together recorded four 1-2-3 finishes.

For the women, sophomores Jen Narum, Jenna Harris, freshmen Claire Crippen, Liz Shaw, seniors Stephanie Gloverc and Ellie Freeman and Amber Bialas won their respective events Saturday.

On the men's side, sophomore Daniel McMahon, freshmen Matt McLean, John Snawerdt and Scot Robison, senior Jake Shrum and junior Pat Reams won their races.

Sunday, the women placed 1-2-3 again, beating North Carolina as senior Stephanie Glover, Harris and junior Megan Evo ranked at the top, respectively. The men, however, fell to the Tar Heels 151-149.

The Cavaliers return home this coming weekend to take on Pittsburgh at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
