The Virginia women's tennis team opened the 2008 dual match season splitting last weekend's doubleheader.
In the first game of the day, the Cavaliers were unable to overcome No. 65 Marshall, falling 6-1.
In doubles play, juniors Maggie Yahner and Amanda Rales took their match 8-4 against sophomore Thaddea Lock and freshman Isabell Raich at No. 2 doubles. The Cavaliers lost the opening point, however, after Marshall tallied wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 slots.
In singles, the Thundering Herd overpowered the Cavaliers in five of six matches. Rales registered Virginia's sole singles point, defeating junior Karolina Soor 6-3, 6-0.
Returning to the courts later in the afternoon, Virginia defeated Richmond 6-1, securing its first win of the season.
The Cavaliers snatched wins from all three doubles matches -- Yahner and senior Lindsey Pereira against juniors Pamela Duran and Ashlee Vosters (8-3); Rales and sophomore Jennifer Stevens against sophomore Erin Clark and junior Xenia Schneider (8-0); and juniors Lara Alexander and Hampton Williams against freshmen Kelly Tidwell and Isabel Arana (8-4).
In singles, Rales, Stevens, Pereira, Yahner and Alexander gave Virginia five consecutive set wins before Williams fell to Marshall's Arana, 6-0, 4-6, 10-7.
The Cavaliers (1-1) return to action Wednesday as they host No. 15 William & Mary at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
