The Virginia wrestling team split its dual meets this past weekend, defeating North Carolina Friday in Charlottesville and losing to Virginia Tech Sunday in Richmond.
The Cavaliers took their dual-meet win streak to four Friday when they beat North Carolina 18-13. Sophomore Ross Gitomer earned a decision at 125 pounds to start the meet, and the Cavaliers never trailed after that. Virginia won six of the 10 weight classes by decision, including a tough 2-1 victory at 141 pounds for freshman Nick Nelson and freshman Chris Henrich's 10th straight match victory at 174 pounds.
The Cavaliers continued their ACC season against Virginia Tech Sunday at Deep Run High School in Richmond. The match remained close throughout, but a pin in the closing seconds of the 141-pound match provided the Hokies with the cushion they needed to pull out the win.
The two teams split the 10 matches, and seven matches were decided by four points or fewer. Henrich continued his match win streak with a 6-2 victory against No. 20 sophomore Eric Decker. Three of the four ranked wrestlers lost their matches Sunday.
Virginia junior No. 20 Eric Albright won his match by major decision at 133 pounds to give the Cavaliers their last lead of the day, 10-9. The two teams split the last four matches, but the pin for Hokie freshman Chris Diaz at 141 pounds gave Virginia Tech the lead for the rest of the meet.
Virginia finishes its non-conference schedule Saturday at Memorial Gymnasium against Newberry and Campbell.
