The Cavalier men’s golf team got its season off to a solid start Sunday, earning seventh place at the Maryland Intercollegiate Golf Tournament.
With the Terps hosting, the inaugural tournament was a test of both skill and stamina for the 18 men’s golf teams at the River Marsh Golf Club in Cambridge, Md. Storms accumulated on Maryland’s coast Saturday as a result of Hurricane Hanna, forcing the day’s tee times to be moved to Sunday. Teams stepped out on the 6,801-yard course at 6:40 a.m. Sunday for their first round of 18 originally scheduled for Saturday, only to return at noon to play a second round.
At the end of 36 holes, much of Virginia’s success could be attributed to stellar performances by Cavalier freshman Ben Kohles and sophomore Will Collins. Kohles’ 75 in the morning, followed by an afternoon 67 on the par-71 course, led to his individual finish at 13th place, which was the best finish for a Cavalier golfer.
Collins landed at 24th, with teammates sophomore Amory Davis (32nd) and junior Kyle Stough (39th) not far behind. In team scores, Arkansas came out on top with a cumulative 544 for both rounds, while N.C. State’s score of 564 placed its team second.
