Economics and the election

I am glad to see that Amanda Nichols (“McCain provides relief,” Sept. 30) and Phil Sukys (“Obama encourages growth,” Sept. 30) were able to find common ground in their respective candidate’s positions: both Obama and McCain want to ease the burden of taxation on small businesses, reduce excessive government spending, and give relief to struggling middle class families. Obviously each senator is intent on giving ordinary men and women the governmental support needed to realize the American Dream--to live a comfortable lifestyle, retain their wealth earned, and venture into entrepreneurialism.
The only component of John McCain’s taxation plan with which I take umbrage is his insistance on maintaining the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. Not only is this depriving the country of needed revenue, but it is unpalatable that the richest Americans are seen to not be contributing their fair share to the country’s piggy bank. In his acceptance speech for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1932 Franklin Roosevelt described that through this flawed plan, “a favored few are helped and...[it is hoped that] some of their prosperity will leak through, sift through, to labor, to the farmer, to the small business man. That theory belongs to the party of Toryism, and I had hoped that most of the Tories left this country in 1776.”
The power of America lies in the economic strength of its middle class. Let us not sacrifice the interests of the ordinary American by making the gulf between rich and poor wider.
