The Virginia men’s soccer team won its fourth straight game Friday night, pulling out a 1-0 victory against No. 12 North Carolina with a penalty kick goal in the 85th minute.
Freshman midfielder Tony Tchani capitalized on the opportunity late in the game to give Virginia the victory on the road against a strong Tar Heel squad. With the win Virginia improves to 6-3 (3-0 ACC) and the Tar Heels fall to 8-2-1 (1-2 ACC).
Tchani’s late goal was his eighth of the season, fourth penalty kick goal and second game-winning goal. Virginia junior goalkeeper Michael Giallombardo recorded his third shutout of the season while posting four saves.
The win marked North Carolina’s first home loss of the season and also was Virginia’s first victory at North Carolina since 2000.
