Sexist caricature

The Cavalier Daily was wrong to publish Monday’s editorial cartoon by Thomas Lynch (Nov. 24). Not only is the cartoon demeaning to women, but it shows a clear disregard for the historic campaign and subsequent accomplishments of Hillary Rodham Clinton. The depiction of Clinton as a wild-eyed, fang barring puppy held on a leash by President-elect Obama was not only mean-spirited, but blatantly sexist. The cartoon not so gently veils the underlying assumption that any woman who attempts to affirm power in politics is either trivial or, based on the depiction of Clinton, downright crazy.

No matter how one views Clinton’s politics or her selection as Secretary of State, she should receive the same type of respect as any male politician. She is a free-thinking, independent woman who built a constituency 18 million strong as well as countless admirers around the world. She is not guided by any man’s leash. The Cavalier Daily should select cartoons that represent a variation of viewpoints. To many women Clinton represents a public display of their everyday struggles in careers often dominated by men. The stamp she will leave on the lives of young women is one that should be respected, not mocked.

Lauren Seeliger and Brandon Kile, two third-year Cavalier Daily News writers, discuss the impact of the student housing frenzy on both University students and the Charlottesville community.
