It’s Not Funny Because It’s Not True

I know that editorial cartoons are not always meant as a literal interpretation of reality, but Monday’s cartoon by Wesley Andrews missed the mark entirely. If Mr. Andrews had paid attention, he’d have noticed that no commercials for American cars aired during the Super Bowl.

This was a decision made by General Motors and Chrysler (the two automakers to have received “bailout” money from the United States government) precisely to avoid the sort of reaction portrayed in the comic.

In fact, General Motors had already chosen to sit out Super Bowl XLIII back in September. These automakers recognized that there were more important things to spend their hard-won money on.

There were expensive advertisements produced by Audi, Hyundai, and Toyota (which hail from Germany, South Korea, and Japan respectively), but they were certainly not directly funded by American taxpayers.
