Old Dominion edges Cavalier mat men 21-18

The Cavalier mat men fell to Old Dominion Sunday 21-18, losing their last nonconference matchup of the season.

Virginia (9-10, 0-2 ACC) got off to a strong start against Old Dominion (14-6) — ranked No. 18 by InterMat— as sophomore Chris Henrich, senior Rocco Caponi and junior Brent Jones recorded victories for the Cavaliers in the first three weight classes of the day. No. 9 Henrich improved his record to 31-1 on the season, while No. 19 Jones scored an upset against 15th-ranked Old Dominion junior Jesse Strawn.

The Cavaliers failed to capitalize on their early lead, however, losing their next four bouts to the Monarchs. The match was tied going into the final bout when 11th-ranked Old Dominion redshirt junior Chris Brown overpowered Virginia senior Mike Sewell to secure a victory in the 165-pound weight class to propel the Monarchs to victory.

The Cavaliers will return to Charlottesville this weekend to continue ACC competition, taking on N.C. State and Duke.
