Lack of communication

News about the disappearance of Morgan Harrington has covered the front pages of The Cavalier Daily and local newspapers like The Hook for several days now, offering detailed information on her family, her movements and contact information, and asking if any one has tips on her disappearance. However, the University has failed to reassure students about how they have been working with police to ensure this does not happen again. We are yet to receive any e-mails on what to do in case we are found in a situation like Harrington's, the normal protocol or procedure for a missing student, or information about increased security in the area where Harrington went missing. Students received a "Reminders for Having a Safe Halloween" e-mail, which is likely standard for every year or for all community-wide events, e.g., football games and tail-gating events. As a first-year, out-of-state student, unfamiliar with Charlottesville, it is extremely unsettling to know a student went missing and two weeks later has yet to be found. I feel in the dark regarding things like whether it is safe or not to be in the area she went missing. Is it okay to go to downtown Charlottesville? Is there a possibility that this will turn into a series of kidnappings? With the text-message alerts I signed up for during orientation, the accessibility of e-mail, and the faculty and staff that are a part of Student Affairs, I think there are ample resources for the student body to be contacted and alerted of any schedule changes we should adhere to until Harrington is found.
