Despite 27 points from sophomore guard Sylven Landesberg, Virginia lost its sixth straight game last night 74-62 against Miami in Coral Gables, Fla. The losing streak has precipitated a seven-spot drop in the ACC rankings since the skid began with a home overtime loss against Wake Forest Feb. 6.
The Cavaliers and Hurricanes were knotted until 14 minutes remained in the second half, when Miami started to pull away and scored eight unanswered points. Virginia struggled to maintain offensive pressure on the Hurricanes, and though Landesberg sunk six three-pointers on the night, none came during the game's final nine minutes, when the team went 1-7 from behind the arc.
Forward Dwayne Collins led the way for the Hurricanes, scoring 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting. The Hurricanes consistently outrebounded the Cavaliers, as center Julian Gamble controlled the glass with a game-high 12 boards. Senior center Jerome Meyinsse brought down seven for the Cavaliers, while also dishing out three assists.
Virginia's next contest will be Saturday against Duke at home. Currently the Blue Devils - No. 1 in the conference standings - are the only ACC team ranked in the top 25 nationally.
