The Cavalier Daily
Serving the University Community Since 1890

Right on target

This letter is in regards to the March 4 lead editorial "Leading the Pack." In this editorial, the Managing Board endorsed candidates for the offices of chair for both the University Judiciary and Honor Committees. Let me start by saying that I am flattered that The Cavalier Daily believes that I would be a good candidate for UJC chair. Moreover, I applaud the Managing Board for taking an interest in the issues currently facing the UJC. Despite this, The Cavalier Daily must employ a fair and more comprehensive process if it plans to continue endorsing in the future. During the election season, The Cavalier Daily only interviews candidates running in traditionally competitive or contested races. This year, only candidates from the College of Arts and Sciences and School of Commerce were interviewed. Choosing only to speak with these candidates has unfortunate consequences. For example, both of the representatives from the Nursing School will begin their third terms on the Judiciary this April. Each has contributed substantially to the Committee, and the fact that they were not considered in this process simply because of the school they represent is disheartening. Moving forward, the Managing Board ought to either invite all elected representatives to interview for an endorsement, or they should clearly note which candidates were interviewed. The Cavalier Daily should continue to play an important role in vetting candidates for office in agencies such as the Judiciary. Nonetheless, this process must engage all potential candidates. I am confident that the Managing Board will review the circumstances surrounding this year's endorsement and create a better system to be applied next year.
