Team opens ACC play with sweep

The Virginia softball team continued its winning streak during ACC play this past Sunday after sweeping its doubleheader against Maryland (9-10).

During the first contest, the Cavaliers (12-9) survived a seventh-inning scare to best the Terrapins (9-10) 5-3. Senior outfielder Sarah Tackes delivered a pair of hits and three RBIs to help knock Maryland's sophomore pitcher Kendra Knight out of the game early. Knight came into the game with a 1.79 ERA and 86 strikeouts, but Virginia forced her exit after two innings of play.

Virginia senior Nicole Koren starred offensively during the second game, knocking in two runs on two hits en route to a 3-1 victory.

Meanwhile, Virginia freshman pitcher Melanie Mitchell dazzled in both games, improving to 8-7 on the season. Coming off a career-high 16-strikeout game, the pitcher again proved difficult to hit, fanning 11 batters in the first game while allowing three runs in seven innings. In her second outing, Mitchell pitched a complete game and surrendered just one run.

The team's latest victories add to its recent hot streak. Starting the season 4-7, the Cavaliers have won eight of their last 10 games. During that stretch, Virginia swept through the Cavalier Classic, defeating both Delaware State and Columbia twice. Then, after dropping two to Longwood, the team won its doubleheader against Norfolk State.

This weekend Virginia will play Louisiana-Lafayette, San Jose State, Fresno State, Oklahoma and Arizona during the Judi Garman Invitational at Fullerton, Calif.
