The 13th-ranked Virginia women's golf team took second place at the ACC Tournament this weekend in Greensboro, N.C. Freshman Brittany Altomare and junior Calle Nielson both finished in second with scores of 212, one shot behind Wake Forest freshman Michelle Shin.
Virginia was tied with Duke after the first day of the tournament, having shot a four-over 288 after 18 holes. The Cavaliers finished the first round two shots behind the leader, Wake Forest. Nielson was tied with three other golfers for second place with a one-under 70. Freshman Nicole Agnello, meanwhile, placed sixth, shooting even-par 71, while Altomare was one shot behind her in eighth.\nVirginia remained in a tie with Duke for second place, at 18-over 586 after 36 holes. Wake Forest continued to sit atop the scoreboard, with a margin of 15 holes separating the Deacons. Altomare led the way for the Cavaliers, shooting a two-under 69 in the second round, placing her in third place overall with a 36-hole score of 141. She was one shot behind co-leaders Michelle Shin and Cheyenne Woods, both of Wake Forest. Nielson trailed Altomare by two shots, ending up in fourth place as the tournament headed into its final round
Altomare and Nielson's second-place finishes helped the team rally to a strong finish, and Virginia gave its strongest performance Sunday. Nevertheless, the squad could only lower Wake Forest's comfortable lead down to four shots, and as a result, the Demon Deacons successfully defended their place as ACC champions.
Virginia now awaits its assignment to one of the NCAA regional tournaments, which takes place May 6-8.
