The Virginia men's golf team placed runner-up at the ACC Championship in New London, N.C. this past weekend, falling behind Georgia Tech by 13 strokes. Including this tournament, the Cavaliers have finished no worse than third in seven of their 10 tournaments this year.
The first round kicked out with impressive play from junior Will Collins, who wound up in a three-way tie for sixth place with a 3-under 69. Sophomore Ben Kohles came in 10th, one stroke behind his teammate. Overall, the team ended the first round in fifth place with a 2-under 286, putting it two strokes behind Clemson. The tournament leader for day one was Georgia Tech, which shot a 9-under 279, one shot better than second-place Duke and Wake Forest.
Virginia managed to increase its position on the leaderboard Saturday during the second round. Collins shot a 4-under 68, moving him to a tie for fourth place. Meanwhile, Kohles finished sixth with a 3-under 69. Freshman Mac McLaughlin, playing in his first tournament as a scoring member, shot a 2-under-70 to place 22. The team moved from fifth to fourth with a score of 566 after 36 holes. Nevertheless, Georgia Tech remained the leader with a score of 21-under 555, giving it an advantage of seven shots more than second-place Duke.
From fourth, the Cavaliers climbed to second place, finishing the tournament at 10-under 854. Collins led the way for the Cavaliers with a 54-hole score of 208, second to Georgia Tech's Chesson Hadley, whose two-stroke advantage over Collins earned him medalist honors. Kohles finished in 11th after shooting a 2-over 74 in the final round.
Virginia will host the Cavalier Classic May 1-2 at Birdwood Golf Course.
