Cavalier in pros: a major transition

Ross LaBauex talks national championship, life in MLS, Colorado Rapids and 2010 Virginia men

What did winning the national championship mean for you? \nIt was an awesome feeling as a senior to go out with my boys. I told Jordan [Evans] my freshman year, 'Look, man, don't worry about [the semifinal loss to UCLA].' And three years later, we were back and we won it. So it was awesome to win it for coach [George] Gelnovatch and everybody ... It was something that I'll never forget. The guys that I competed with will be my friends for life. I still stay in touch with Neil [Barlow] and Jordan, and Tony [Tchani] is in the pros now. I still stay in touch with Greg [Monaco], just to make sure that this year's gonna be a good year for them. It's tough after winning a championship ... Don't become complacent. We know what we did last year was awesome and special, but you just gotta keep it going."

What did winning the title do for you personally for your stock heading into the draft?\nI think it helped me. I told our team: Whatever we wanna get, whatever goals we wanna achieve - individually and as a team - we need each other. I need Tony, I needed Johnny [Villanueva], I needed Diego [Restrepo], I needed Greg. I needed everyone to play well, to play as a team to get there ... The final four came around, I played more. They're the only games going on in college, so it's easy for coaches to come out and see you, and I think it helped me a lot.

Have you seen Tony Tchani or any familiar faces in MLS so far?\nI stay in touch with Tony; we talk a lot. We had gone up [to New York] earlier in the year for a U.S. Open Cup Match, so I played against him. It was tough to play against your teammates, but it was fun.

How's everything going for you in the MLS?\nIt's been great. It's tough when you're not playing much, but as a rookie, you just wanna work hard and do some extra things to try to bust into the starting lineup and show the coaches you're prepared and ready to go.

Who are some of the big players on your new team, Colorado?\nPablo Mastroeni - he just recently after playing in Philadelphia logged the most minutes in Colorado history. Two World Cups. He's an awesome captain, role model, teammate, professional - he's the backbone of our team. Another guy - Claudio L
