Nielson guides Cavs in first tournament

The No. 11 Virginia women's golf team opened its season yesterday with an eighth-place finish at the Fall Preview, held in Bryan, Texas.

Senior All-American Calle Nielson led the way for the Cavaliers, finishing 13th overall at 3-under 213. Virginia fielded four of the five players who competed in the NCAA Championships in May.

Eighteen teams competed in the tournament, including 13 ranked in Golfweek's preseason top 15. ACC rivals Duke and Wake Forest finished fourth and 13th, respectively. After the first round of play, Virginia sat in 15th place; not a single player shot under par.

A day later, however, Virginia climbed the leaderboard to ninth place. Nielson and sophomore Nicole Agnello helped the Cavaliers return to form, shooting 4-under 68 and 3-under 69, respectively. Nielson carded a final round score of 1-under 71, while sophomore All-American Brittany Altomare shot a team-high 3-under 69 as Virginia moved ahead of Tulane to finish eighth.

Virginia next competes Sept. 26 at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Vail, Colo.
