Squad drops two matches on road

The Virginia volleyball team (6-7, 0-3 ACC) went 0-2 this weekend, dropping matches to No. 13 Florida State and Miami.

Friday night, the Cavaliers were swept by the Seminoles, who improved their ACC record to 2-0. Virginia fell with set scores of 25-13, 25-19 and 25-21. On defense, senior defensive specialist A.J. Cushman led the team with 17 digs, while sophomore middle hitter Jessica O'Shoney tallied three blocks. Junior outside hitter Simone Asque led the offensive effort with nine kills, and freshman outside hitter McKenzie Adams racked up seven of her own.

Yesterday afternoon, the Cavaliers started off strong, defeating the 'Canes 25-22 during the first set. Unable to hold on to the momentum, though, the squad allowed Miami to retaliate with its own 25-18 win. After a brief intermission, the Cavaliers came back to take an early third-set lead before falling 25-20. During the fourth set, Virginia was neck-and-neck with the 'Canes, tying on three separate occasions at 8-8, 14-14 and 19-19. The Cavaliers went up 21-19 but failed to contain a 4-0 run by Miami, going down 23-21. Virginia held on to force extra points after trying the set at 24. But Miami went up 25-24 and - after an insignificant timeout by the Cavaliers - finished the game with a score of 26-24. Asque again led the Cavaliers with 27 kills, and O'Shoney led the frontline with six blocks. Five Cavaliers had double-digit digs, and Cushman led the team with 20. Virginia will look for its first conference win as it heads back to Charlottesville this weekend to take on Georgia Tech and Clemson.
