Lost in translation

The University should axe its language requirements and focus on broadening cultural perspectives

I OVERHEARD two Spanish majors discussing their Spanish class as I was walking down the Lawn today. Toward the end of the conversation one exclaimed, "One more semester and I'm done!" This sort of attitude seems prevalent among members of the student body. Similar statements can be heard weekly, if not daily, across Grounds when language requirements are mentioned. Although studying a language has many benefits, the 14-credit foreign language requirement is a misuse of students' time.\nThe College's "About A&S" page explains its goals by quoting Mr. Jefferson: "to provide students with the general knowledge and intellectual skills that allow them to become engaged
