The Virginia volleyball team concluded its season with a five-set loss at Virginia Tech Friday night. The loss marks the second time the Cavaliers fell to the Hokies this season.
After four sets of back-and-forth play, Virginia Tech set the tone for the fifth set with a 4-0 lead. Virginia came within two to make the score 12-10, but the Hokies scored three of the last four points to win the set, 15-11, and the match, 3-2.
Virginia was doomed by a season-high 17 service errors. Although the Cavaliers (14-16, 8-12 ACC) held a 14-11 advantage in blocks, they managed nearly 30 digs less than the Hokes, going 86-59.
Freshman outside hitter and ACC Freshman of the Year McKenzie Adams led the Cavaliers with 18 kills, finishing the season with a total 264 and ninth place in program history for a freshman. She also completed her sixth double-double of the season with 10 digs.
Earlier in the match, after Virginia clinched the first set 25-17, Virginia Tech (19-11, 10-10 ACC) took a 25-17 set of its own. The Hokies jumped out to a 12-6 lead during the second set and maintained at least a four-point lead the rest of the way for the victory.
The Cavaliers seemed poised to take command of the match with a tight third-set victory, which saw 14 ties and nine lead changes. Virginia broke a 24-24 tie with two straight points to clinch the set. With the match on the line, the Hokies responded with a 25-23 win in the fourth set.
Despite the loss, senior defensive specialist A.J. Cushman etched her name in the record books with 543 digs on the season - the fourth best single season record in program history. Her 1,432 career total digs also rank fourth best in the program.
