The Virginia women's tennis team opened its season with the U.Va Winter Invitational at Boar's Head Sports Club last weekend against Arkansas, Utah and LSU. Virginia swept all eight flights in the singles competition while winning two of four doubles flights.
Junior Emily Fraser led the Cavaliers by winning the singles title with two victories in Flight A. Fraser lost her first match to Utah junior Anastasia Putilina 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, but she recovered to beat Arkansas junior Stephanie Roy 6-2, 6-2 and runner-up junior Whitney Wolf of LSU 5-7, 6-0, 7-5 on back-to-back days.
In the doubles competition, the pairing of Fraser and Tomljanovich defeated LSU's team of sophomore Kaitlin Burns and freshman Yvette Vlaar 8-2 on the final day to clinch Flight B. Hardenbergh and Viera won by an identical score against sophomore Ebie Wilson and freshman Ariel Morton of LSU to win Flight C. The overall doubles championship was claimed by another LSU duo consisting of Wolf and sophomore Keri Frankenberger.
