The No. 26 Virginia women's tennis team emerged from its first conference match of the year with a 5-2 victory against No. 52 Wake Forest. The Cavaliers (3-0, 1-0 ACC) continued their hot start to the season despite allowing an opponent to score for the first time this season.
The Demon Deacons (1-1, 0-1 ACC) quickly established a lead in doubles behind senior Emilee Malvehy and junior Ryann Cutillo's 8-3 upset of Virginia sophomore Maria Fuccillo and freshman Rashmi Teltumbde, the No. 16-ranked doubles team in the country. The Cavaliers recovered to win the doubles point, however, when junior Emily Fraser and sophomore Hana Tomljanovic, the No. 10-ranked duo, defeated the No. 14 team of junior Kayla Duncan and sophomore Kathryn Talbert, 9-7.
The singles matches went mostly according to script as the higher-ranked individual won four of the five contests involving at least one ranked player. In the sole singles upset, Virginia sophomore Erin Vierra, the highest-ranked player on either team at No. 29, fell to Malvehy, 6-4, 2-6, 10-1. Nevertheless, Virginia responded with victories from junior Lindsey Hardenbergh, Tomljanovic, Fuccillo, and Teltumbde as the team secured its first win away from Charlottesville. Virginia will play on the road again when it faces off against No. 25 Illinois Sunday.
