Virginia wastes Sene

Wake Forest earned its first conference victory Saturday at the expense of the Cavalier men's basketball team. The Demon Deacons had lost five straight ACC games by at least 19 points, but overcame a late Virginia lead to win, 76-71.

The Cavaliers (11-10, 2-5 ACC) entered Winston-Salem hoping to rebound from an abysmal 66-42 loss to Maryland last Thursday night. Virginia's offense appeared to recover against Wake Forest (8-13, 1-5 ACC) as five Cavalier shooters reached double figures in points. After collecting a career-high 15 rebounds against the Terrapins, junior center Assane Sene earned his first-career double-double, posting 15 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman guard Joe Harris and senior guard Mustapha Farrakhan contributed 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Virginia's usually stout defense, however, faltered down the stretch. Six Demon Deacons scored in double digits, led by sophomore guard C.J. Harris's 15 points. Freshman forward Travis McKie added 12 points and 10 rebounds, including five crucial points during Wake Forest's 16-6 run during the second half.

Prior to the defeat, Virginia had lost just one game under coach Tony Bennett when it scored 70 points or more. The team has been prone to losing late leads though, and surrendered a 10-point advantage with 13 minutes to play.

By allowing Wake Forest to finally steal an ACC win, Virginia drops into a tie for ninth in the conference. The squad will look to improve in those standings when it hosts Clemson this Wednesday at 9 p.m.
