The No. 2 Virginia men's lacrosse team wasted an offensive master class led by junior attackman Steele Stanwick as No. 11 Johns Hopkins defeated the Cavaliers 12-11 in Baltimore Saturday.
Stanwick paced Virginia (7-2) with three goals and four assists - both game-high totals - but the Blue Jays (6-2) prevailed behind the sturdy goalkeeping of sophomore goalkeeper Pierce Bassett, who made 14 saves on the afternoon. Virginia forced 17 Johns Hopkins turnovers but committed five penalties to give the Blue Jays 5:30 of extra-man offense. Johns Hopkins senior attackman Chris Boland and sophomore midfielder Lee Coppersmith also added hat tricks as the Blue Jays snapped a six-game losing streak against Virginia and captured the Doyle Smith Cup for the first time since the rivalry trophy's inception in 2006. The Cavaliers next play their ACC opener against Maryland Saturday at 12 p.m. in Scott Stadium.
