No. 2 Virginia opens outdoors with wins

After capping off a sterling indoor season with a resounding victory at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, the No. 2 Virginia men's tennis team began play on outdoor courts last week and earned two road wins against mid-ranked opponents to remain undefeated for the year.

The Cavaliers (16-0, 3-0 ACC) defeated No. 56 Louisiana State 5-2, March 9, and No. 28 Baylor 6-1, March 12. Before the match against LSU, Virginia coach Brian Boland realigned his team's doubles pairings for the second time this season, returning senior Michael Shabaz and junior Drew Courtney to the No. 1 spot after pairing Courtney with junior Steven Eelkman Rooda at No. 3 during National Indoors before Spring Break.

The new pairings easily captured the doubles point against LSU (5-8). Virginia's doubles teams were swept by Baylor (9-3), which scorched Shabaz and Courtney at the No. 1 spot and eked out wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to hand the Cavaliers their first loss at the doubles point so far this season. Virginia's singles players quickly erased the early 1-0 deficit, however, and trounced Baylor 6-0 in singles play.

The Cavaliers continue their 11-match road trip Friday at No. 29 Oklahoma before facing No. 3 Texas Sunday.
