Team begins run at crown

The Virginia track and field team begin its journey to claim a conference crown today at the ACC Outdoor Championships in Durham, N.C. The three-day event will kick off with heptathlon and decathlon contests this afternoon before concluding with 4x400 meter relays Saturday evening.

Sophomore Robby Andrews and redshirt senior Stephanie Garcia highlight the list of eight Cavaliers who currently rank No. 3 or higher in their respective events entering the competition. Andrews - the reigning ACC Track Outdoor Track Performer of the Year - sits at No. 2 in the conference in the 800 meter race, while Garcia holds the top spot in steeplechase. Less than two weeks ago, Garcia broke the all-time Virginia record while also posting the nation's fastest time in the event at the George Mason Spring Invitational with a first-place finish at the 9:56.96 mark.

Junior Morgane Gay, senior Adams Abdulrazaaq and freshman Christopher Foley also are poised to make a run at individual running titles after a solid season of work during which they all earned top-three rankings.

Junior Erin Wykoff, junior Andy Fahringer and junior Vincenzo Chiariello, meanwhile, lead the Cavaliers into the field event portion of the championships.

Following the conclusion of the ACC Championships, the Cavaliers will begin preparation for the Penn Relays scheduled to start April 28.
