In remarkable fashion, the top-ranked Virginia men's tennis team captured the ACC Tournament this weekend without surrendering a single point. The Cavaliers swept Maryland, Georgia Tech and Duke each by a score of 4-0 and now advance to the regional rounds of the NCAA Tournament, which are set to begin Friday in Charlottesville.
No. 13 Duke was the only team that came within striking distance of Virginia (29-0, 14-0 ACC) and appeared capable of earning wins against sophomore Jarmere Jenkins, junior Drew Courtney and sophomore Julen Uriguen during the finals yesterday afternoon. But just as Jenkins and Courtney prepared to begin third sets and Uriguen was staving off defeat in the second, freshman Alex Domijan earned the Cavaliers' fourth point of the afternoon to halt play and seal the overall victory. Seniors Michael Shabaz and Sanam Singh already had earned the Cavaliers' second and third points with breezy, straight-set wins after Virginia opened the match by capturing the doubles point.
Virginia's title this weekend solidified its position as the nation's best team. It leads Tennessee, the nation's No. 2-ranked team, by nearly 10 points in the national rankings and has not lost since last season's NCAA Tournament, when the Cavaliers were eliminated, 4-2, by Southern California during the semifinals. This season, the Trojans trail Tennessee by just 0.39 points in the rankings and have traded the No. 2 spot with the Volunteers for much of the year.
Virginia has never won a national title despite having finished five consecutive regular seasons as the nation's top-ranked team. The Cavaliers now host the first two rounds of NCAA Tournament play this weekend, with Stanford hosting the later rounds of the tournament.
