Several members of the Virginia women's tennis team found early success this past weekend as the Cavaliers hosted foes from a variety of schools in the U.Va. Fall Invitational at the Snyder Tennis Center. Two Cavaliers secured the top two singles competitions, while a Virginia duo claimed the doubles title at the event.
No. 74 junior Erin Vierra downed three competitors to earn a spot in the Singles A finale against N.C. State sophomore Joelle Kissell, who had upset No. 18 senior Lindsey Hardenbergh in two sets during the second round of competition. Vierra and Kissell split the opening sets before Vierra eked out a narrow 7-6 victory in the deciding final set to earn her second individual win at the event in two years.
Freshman Molly O'Koniewski, meanwhile, nabbed the Singles B Flight crown in her first appearance for the blue and orange. The newcomer cruised past VCU sophomore Daria Yakauleva in straight sets in the singles finale and also contributed in the Double B Flight in which she and sophomore Caryssa Peretz downed a duo from UNC Greensboro 9-7 to top all other competition.
The Cavaliers will now begin preparation for the ITA All-American Championships which are slated to begin Oct. 1 in Los Angeles, Calif.
